Salinas Chiropractor Discusses Sitting Too Often
Computers are a part of almost everyone's daily lives which results in most people sitting for extended periods of time. New technology like smartphones have people sitting and using them for entertainment and work in lieu of taking a walk, running, or exercising. A typical day for a working person may consist of constant sitting; sitting in their car, sitting in front of a computer, drive home, and then sitting on a couch relaxing on their smartphone. A visit to your chiropractor at Cater Chiropractic can help mitigate back pain associated with sitting all day.
The Trouble with Sitting
People with jobs where they sit all day would argue with the previous paragraph stating that there is no choice but to drive to work and sit all day. It may be true that this is what their job requires from them but sitting all day is unhealthy and causes serious issues later in life. Some office chairs claim that they are “ergonomically sound” meaning that they prevent the problems that sitting proposes. Even with these chairs, gravity is still the overpowering factor acting on the body. Sitting for extended periods of time cause more problems than just back pain; sitting flattens your butt, tightens your hips and hamstrings, which makes you more prone to injuries during exercise. More serious problems can also arise like the risk of: blood clots, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain. Research has proven that even working out once a day will not reverse sitting all day. Serious commitment must be taken to start moving more throughout the day.
What to Do If You Have a Sedentary Job in Salinas
A sitting posture puts twice the amount of stress on your spine than standing does which causes many of the problems mentioned above. Hunching forward in a chair while you work causes even greater problems. When you upper body and head lean forward, your body makes a “C” shape changing the natural curve of the lower spine and after long periods of time it shifts the spine. If you have an occupation that requires you to sit all day, there are a couple options you have to protect your spine. One very important and easy problem to fix is slouching. Straighten your back and attempt to maintain your natural position.
Secondly, stand up and get out of your chair at least every 30 minutes. Whether it be getting some water, stretching, or just standing, it is necessary to get out of your chair. Standing desks are very helpful in accomplishing this. The purpose of these small movements is to keep the muscles and tendons flexible and loose. If you believe sitting is ruining your back call our team at Cater Chiropractic to fix your back pain and restore your spine.
